Hi anyone and everyone who watches :+devwatch: follows, or stalks me. :paranoid:

So Synfull wrote an interesting status update recently (if you call May recent), lamenting how the emote community is no longer active or around, despite the huge popularity of emojis these days, which got me thinking...

I have a few thoughts myself as to why this is, and I thought I'd share them.

1. There is no real need for emotes anymore.
Well I would argue that there still is... but back in the days there were no emojis, so we created what we needed. I don't think it even crosses people's minds anymore that they can create their own. Also, people tend to just use what they already have.

2. People are too busy.
IDK about anyone else, but life has gotten so busy, and I have very little time to draw anymore.

3. People move on
Most people don't set out to become emoticonists or wouldn't classify themselves as primarily an emoticonist. It seems to be an art form which people dabble in before moving on to something else, or they do it on the side *while* they do their main art.

4. Miscats
Sadly I don't think this will ever be properly addressed / fixed by dA.

I have more thoughts, but I'll save them for another journal...
